Couples Financial Counseling Should Help Couples To:
In the first session, my goal is to develop an understanding of the difficulties that both people are having concerning money in the relationship. From this meeting, we develop specific goals for financial counseling. I listen to each person and help the couple identify both the big picture and the smaller issues that are often important within it, including spending habits, savings goals, and debt. I give attention to each perspective, and learn how these financial issues have developed over time. Together we come to new understandings about what the causes and parts of the problems are. I then teach couples specific skills and strategies that will allow them to manage their financial problems and communicate about difficult financial issues in a safe and effective way. As sessions continue, we focus on what’s going well and areas that need continued attention and skill building. My work is focused on helping each couple develop solutions that best fit their personal financial resources, goals, and needs.
The number of sessions is based entirely on a couple’s needs. Counseling is sometimes able to resolve difficult issues in 6-12 sessions, while more challenging patterns of interaction and conflict may take longer to work through.
In the beginning most couples find weekly, 60 minute sessions to be the most optimal for creating momentum and change. As progress continues, I work with couples to decide on a frequency of sessions that best fits their needs.
